Truck Accident Data

Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tracks, collates and parses data on all sorts of accidents that occur on our nation's streets and highways. Through their Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), they track information according to type of accident, type of vehicle, accident location and many other metrics, and they break these numbers down on a state and national level. According to FARS, truck accidents accounted for 7.1 percent of all fatal vehicular accidents in 2009 that killed 3,215 people across the country. 67 people were killed in Arizona truck accidents that year, and this accounted for 6.6 percent of all traffic accident fatalities.

National Truck Accident Statistics

The NHTSA reports that there are more than 500,000 accidents involving trucks every year in this country. Thankfully, most of these are small, fender-bender-type accidents resulting in minor injuries. However, as you can see from the fatalities mentioned above, some folks involved in trucking accidents are not so lucky and are killed or suffer serious, life-changing injuries. Other national truck accident statistics include the following:

  • Sixty-eight percent of fatal truck accidents occurred on rural highways and interstates.
  • Sixty-six percent of all fatal truck accidents occurred during the daytime.
  • Total revenue of the trucking industry topped $610 billion in 2009, and total revenue is expected to double by 2015. That means there will be even more big rigs on our nation's streets and highways.
  • Nearly every time (98%) a truck is involved in a fatal accident, the fatalities are people in passenger cars.
  • Trucking accidents account for an additional 98,000 hours of traffic congestion every year.
  • A recent survey found that nearly 20 percent of truck drivers admitted falling asleep at the wheel at least once in the previous three months.

Arizona Truck Accident Statistics

  • In 2005, there were 3,407 accidents involving large trucks on Arizona streets and highways.
  • That year, 126 people were killed in these accidents, and another 1,624 people were injured.
  • The majority of these Arizona truck accidents occurred on state highways and interstates.
