6 Ways to Avoid Being in an Accident with a Large Commercial Truck

When traveling on the highway the risk of being involved in an accident with a commercial truck increase greatly. Sadly, we see many cases of people severely injured or even killed after being hit by a commercial truck. Commercial trucks are very dangerous because they typically weigh 25 times more than a car and are also more difficult to maneuver. In fact being involved in an accident with a commercial truck accounts for one eighth of all traffic fatalities. However, in most of these accidents the driver is not at fault. In most cases the driver of the other car is at fault for a commercial trucking accident. The Injury Board Alliance of Safety Advocates has created 5 tips to help reduce the number of commercial trucking accidents.

  1. Stay Alert: Keep a safe distance from trucks, and watch for signals and lane changes.
  2. Be Visible: Cars are much smaller than trucks, often times cars are in a trucks blind spot. Always use turn signals and make sure that you can see the driver in the truck and that he sees you.
  3. Be Careful when Driving in Bad Weather: Also drive according to the weather and roadway conditions.
  4. Use Caution when Stopping: If you need to make an emergency stop, make sure that you are pulled all the way off of the road.
  5. Avoid aggressive driving- Do not take out driving frustrations with other drivers.
